Description

West Stone Lodge and East Stone Lodge, along with their attached walls, gates, and railings, are a pair of lodges dating from the early 19th century, with later additions and alterations. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, they feature Welsh slate roofs and wrought-iron gates and railings. These lodges were likely designed by Robert Abraham for the Bethell family, with the ironwork created by Watson and Pritchett of York.

The lodges are square in plan and are set between curved walls that are approximately 5 metres long and 1.75 metres high. Between the lodges, there are double gates and railings. The walls are finished with square end piers topped by low pyramidal caps, and both the piers and walls have a plinth and a moulded cornice.

Both lodges are identical, featuring a 6-fielded-panel door with an overlight containing vertical glazing bars, flanked by 8-pane sash windows with ashlar aprons. The front facade has a plinth and a central recess with a 12-pane sash window above an ashlar apron, positioned between two Ionic columns that support a continuous frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The lodges have peaked roofs and a central stack, with a similar facade at the rear.

The gates and railings are also alike, extending approximately 0.5 metres to a pedestrian gate flanked by piers. The inner piers support central double gates, and the gates and railings feature bars and dogbars topped with spear heads, with five levels of rails in between, including hollow circles on the top and centre rails. The iron piers are ornamental.
