Description
South Lodge, formerly known as Wood Cottage, is a house built in the early 19th century with later alterations. It is constructed from stuccoed and rendered brick, topped with a slate roof. The main part of the building is a central two-storey range with a gable end, flanked by a single-storey lean-to on the left and a single-storey wing on the right. The central range features raised quoins. The entrance to the lean-to is an ogee-headed, blind Gothick traceried plank door. There is a central canted bay window with 20th-century casements and a hipped roof. The ground floor of the right wing and the first floor have three-light Yorkshire sash windows under hoodmoulds, with the hood on the first floor extending as an eaves band to the returns. The left return has leaded lights on both the ground and first floors, also under hoodmoulds. The lean-to includes a central rustic timber loggia, and a similar verandah wraps around the right return. The eaves are overhanging, and the wing has a hipped roof, with a side stack at the center.
