Description

The Church of St Augustine, dating to approximately 1401, was built for Bishop Skirlaw and has undergone subsequent additions and alterations. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a concealed roof and is designed in the Perpendicular style.

The church features a three-stage west tower, a six-bay continuous nave and chancel, a south porch to the second bay, and a north vestry to the sixth bay. The tower has diagonal buttresses with offsets, crocketed pinnacles to the top of the second stage, a chamfered plinth with a quatrefoil band, and a hollow-moulded sill band. A three-light pointed window is set within a double-chamfered surround, with a hollow-chamfered hoodmould and label stops that continue as a band to the sides. The second stage has a brattished band, and a niche is located on the west side for a statue. The tower also has two-light, pointed bell openings with blind trefoil-headed lights below transom level, a band with fleurons and gargoyles, and pierced, traceried and crocketed battlements with crocketed pinnacles.

The nave and chancel have buttresses with offsets surmounted by pinnacles with crocketed finials between bays, a double-chamfered plinth, and battlemented parapets. The south side has an embattled, single-low-storey porch to the second bay, featuring a Tudor-arched opening with glass and timber doors, leading to a studded plank door within a hollow-chamfered and roll-moulded surround under a roll-moulded hood with face stops. A pointed plank priest's door, set in a double-chamfered surround under a hollow-chamfered hoodmould, is located to the fifth bay. Pointed three-light windows with hoodmoulds and shield stops are present in each bay, with hollow-moulded sills, except to the second bay. The windows to the second and fifth bays are shorter. An eaves band is present, along with battlemented parapets.

The north side features a studded plank door in a pointed, hollow-chamfered, and roll-moulded surround under a hoodmould with face stops to the second bay. The sixth bay contains a single-bay, low-storey embattled vestry with an oblong window and a pointed plank door to the west. Otherwise, it features three-light pointed windows with hollow-chamfered hoodmoulds, shield stops, and a sill band, except to the sixth bay. Again, the windows to the second and sixth bays are shorter, and there are battlemented parapets. The east end has a five-light pointed window with a hollow-chamfered hoodmould. All windows have Perpendicular tracery and hoodmoulds.

Inside, the tower arch is triple-chamfered pointed, with roll-moulded jambs and capitals. The piscina has an ogeed arch with roll-moulding and an octagonal bowl. Two corbels are present to the east end. Traces of red wall painting and black inscriptions are visible on the south wall and west end. A 19th-century octagonal font and four Neoclassical early 19th-century wall monuments are also within the chancel. Fragments of medieval stained glass are incorporated into the East window.
