Description

Burton Cottage is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the early to mid-19th century, with later additions and alterations. It was originally built as a pair with Ivy House. The construction uses whitewashed pinkish-brown brick in a Flemish bond, topped with pantile roofs. The main part of the building is a two-story, three-bay structure with slightly recessed single-story, single-bay wings extending from either side, and a further range to the rear. The original entrance was in the centre of the main range but is now to the rear via a glazed door. The ground floor of the central range has 16-pane sash windows with stone sills, set under cambered heads, including where the entrance used to be. The first floor has 12-pane, unequally-hung sash windows to the outer bays, with a blind opening in the centre, all with stone sills. The wings have blind window openings with stone sills and cambered heads. A modillion eaves cornice runs along the whole building. The central range has a hipped roof with side chimneys, while the wings have hipped roofs.
