Description

This is a circa 1780 two-storey house constructed of red brick with a pantile roof. It has four windows, each with painted gauged flat arches and near-flush frame sash windows containing glazing bars. Originally, it formed a symmetrical block with number 6, prior to alterations to that property. The front door is contained within a wooden doorcase featuring an architrave, chambranles, enriched consoles, a frieze decorated with an urn and scrolling foliage, and a dentil pediment. Wrought iron guard rails and scrapers are also present.

Inside, the staircase features an open string, slender columnar balusters, and a moulded handrail with a spiral curtail. A back staircase is present, with a closed string. There are two fireplaces on the ground floor; one is elaborately carved with acanthus fronds in an early neo-classical style, and the other has fluted pilasters and a frieze in the style of John Carr. The landing has window seats, fielded panelled reveals, and shutters. A first-floor room features a neo-classical fireplace with finely carved ornament and yellow marble strips. Further neo-classical fireplaces are located on the upper floors. Fine brass locks are also a notable feature. A photograph of the National Monument Register is attached to the listing.
