Description
No. 6 Newbegin is a building dating from around 1780, originally constructed for Sir James Pennyman in 1784. It stands three storeys tall, built of red brick with a slate roof. The building features an original dentil and ogee bracketed eaves cornice. There are four windows with painted, gauged flat arches and near flush frame sashes that include glazing bars. The wood doorcase is adorned with an architrave, chambranles, enriched consoles, a frieze, and a dentil pediment. Wrought iron guard rails are present as well. The second floor includes a late 19th-century addition with casement windows that match the original brickwork reasonably well. Inside, the staircase has an open string design with slender columnar balusters and a moulded handrail that features a spiral curtail. The back stairs are similar but have a closed string. The doors throughout the building have fielded panels. The principal ground floor room boasts an early 19th-century marble chimneypiece that resembles one found in the Library of Norwood House, while other ground floor rooms feature fielded panelling up to dado height. A firemark of the Sun Assurance Company is also present. National Monument Register Photograph.
