Description

This is a late 18th-century windmill tower, raised and refitted around 1825, with a roof dating to around 1970. It is located approximately 20 metres south-west of Mill House. The tower is constructed of brown brick to the first two storeys and red brick to the upper section, with some traces of tarring. It is a tapered round tower of six storeys, topped with a low octagonal roof. The ground floor has four segmental-headed entrances: the northern entrance is blocked, a 20th-century two-fold door is present on the south side, and doorways to the east and west lead to adjoining outhouse ranges (which are of no particular interest). There are also three 6-pane casement windows. The first floor has blocked doors on the north and south sides, with two windows. The second floor features two 12-pane casements and two 20th-century plate-glass casements. The third floor has a 12-pane sliding sash and a plate-glass window, while the fourth floor has a 12-pane casement and a plate-glass window. An early 20th-century weather vane tops the tower. The interior retains the original floors and machinery. Significant fittings include a large silk reel on the ground floor, a governor, silk reel, and brush scalper on the first floor, three sets of stones (two sets of French stones and a single set of Derbyshire grey stones) on the second floor, bins and a screening machine on the third floor, and hoppers on the fourth floor. The silk reels were installed around 1910 in an effort to produce fine white flour. Further silk reels, now removed, were installed in the west outbuilding, which also served as an engine house. The windmill ceased production in 1941.
