Description
Burstwick House is an early 19th-century farmhouse, possibly with earlier origins, and subject to 20th-century renovations. It is constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond to the front and stacks, with red brick elsewhere. The front has a Welsh slate roof, while the remainder is covered with pantiles. The building is L-shaped, comprising a 2-room central entrance-hall front with a single-room wing to the rear left, along with outshuts in the angle and a single-room addition to the rear.
The south front is 2 storeys with an attic, and has a symmetrical 3-bay arrangement. It features a 20th-century restored doorcase with fluted pilasters, an entablature with a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, and a hood. The front door is 6-panelled, with a moulded cornice and a radial overlight in a panelled reveal. Replacement sash windows with glazing bars are set in original stuccoed reveals with sills and channelled, keyed, cambered wedge lintels; a narrower sash is above the entrance. A plain eaves board runs along the top. Stone-coped gables are present, along with ridge and end stacks. The left and right returns incorporate original 16-pane sashes in flush wooden architraves, and 20th-century bow windows set within original openings with sills and lintels matching those on the front.
Inside, there is an open well staircase with a ramped handrail, slender column balusters, and newels. The ground-floor front rooms have moulded cornices and marble chimney-pieces, while the first-floor front bedrooms feature original wooden pilastered chimney-pieces with moulded cornices. Panelled window shutters and 6-fielded panel doors in architraves are found throughout the house.
