Description

Nos. 15 and 17, Kirkgate are a late 17th or early 18th century building of two storeys, constructed in brick with a stone plinth. The roof is steeply pitched and tiled, with three brick stacks. A brick band runs between the ground and first floors, and the building has a wood eaves cornice. The corners feature rusticated quoins, some of which are damaged. There are four windows, with hung sashes and glazing bars, set within painted brick surrounds. The ground floor has three windows, and the first floor has one narrower window. The three doorways have six fielded panels, each topped by a three-light rectangular fanlight. One original doorcase features a moulded architrave, a pulvinated frieze with a panel, and a small dentil cornice. Two later doorways have been added, designed to complement the original. All three doorways have small, flat hoods supported on consoles. A rectangular fanlight is also above the passage entry.

Nos. 15 to 20, Kirkgate are considered part of a group of buildings of local interest alongside The Bayle Gate, several other properties on Kirkgate and Baylegate, the Church of St. Mary, and buildings on Church Green.
