Description
St Edmunds Chapel is a chapel dating from the 13th century, which was virtually rebuilt in 1893 by Smith and Brodrick. It is constructed of cobbles and coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features a plain tile roof adorned with crested ridge tiles. The chapel consists of a four-bay nave and chancel combined, with a western bellcote. The west elevation showcases a tall chamfered lancet window, with a bracketed bellcote above that reaches the ridge. The bellcote includes a moulded semi-circular headed opening and a gabled top.
On the south elevation, there is a moulded pointed doorcase to the west, featuring moulded imposts, and three chamfered lancets to the east. The north elevation has four similar windows. The east end is distinguished by triple stepped chamfered lancets with a moulded sill. All openings are topped with hoodmoulds and have rubble relieving arches above them. The building has sprocketed eaves and stone-coped gables.
Inside, there is a round 13th-century column with a moulded capital embedded in the south wall, and the roof is arched and braced on stone corbels. The chapel also contains a 13th-century drum font. The east window features banded colonnettes, moulded arches, and a continuous hood.
