Description

First World War pillbox, probably built 1917, with Second World War alterations.

MATERIALS: in-situ poured reinforced concrete.

PLAN: rectangular plan.

EXTERIOR: semi-sunken pillbox set into sloping ground between Auburn Farm and Auburn Beck, only 0.80m of the structure being exposed above ground level. The structure is entered by a doorway in the W (rear) wall, the N and S (side) walls are blind, while the front (E) elevation has three gun embrasures. As built, only the central gun embrasure existed to cover the exit off Auburn Sands, this has been widened and secondary embrasures have been cut through the concrete at the NE and SE corners. The roof is a flat concrete slab.

INTERIOR: Access to the interior is blocked, filled with debris and flooded; the walls have smooth concrete surfaces, with horizontal plank shuttering witness marks, and no internal features or fittings.
