Description

Cliff Mill is a windmill built in 1806, located on the north side of Hessle Cliff Road. It is constructed of tarred brick and features a conical tower with six storeys. The tower has six 4-pane windows arranged in a line. On the ground floor, there are three blocked segmental-headed openings of various sizes and dates, along with one boarded door. At the second-floor level, the sockets and corbels for a timber gallery are still visible. There is a boarded double-leaf door with a segmental head leading to the third floor. This mill is notable as the only remaining example of four wind-powered whiting mills that once existed in the former East Riding and originally had five sails designed by Smeaton.
