Description
This is a tombstone located at Burying Hill, approximately 580 metres south of Goole Hall, dating from 1728. It is made of ashlar and commemorates Ewan Empson of Ousefleet Hall, along with his wives Rachel and Patience, and their daughter Rachel. The tombstone features arms carved in relief, which include a shield bearing a chevron and Maltese crosses, topped by a Maltese cross emblem, above an illuminated inscription. The bottom section of the tombstone was obscured during the last survey. This tombstone is part of a series of early 18th century tombstones, with the others being mostly fragmentary, located in the overgrown former graveyard of the Empson family from the nearby Goole Hall.
