Description
Kilnwick Old Hall is the remaining part of Kilnwick Hall, which was once the home of the Grimston family. The building dates from the early 17th century, with a mid-18th century rear parallel range added to the east wing. It is constructed of red brick in English bond and features stone slate roofs. The structure is L-shaped, consisting of two storeys and attics, with five bays in the south wing and four bays in the east wing.
The front elevation has a quarter-round moulded plinth. On the ground floor, there are cross-mullion windows throughout, originally featuring hollow-chamfered rubbed bricks for the mullions and transom, which have since been altered to plain chamfers with cement. Some original casements remain, showcasing square quarries in lead cames and original ironwork, particularly in the east range. This range also includes plank and muntin panelled doors beneath four-centred arches at both ends, along with a similar blocked door in the central area of the south range.
On the first floor, the east range has four two-pane sash windows under segmental brick arches, while the south range displays a mix of fenestration including two-pane sliding sashes, a six-pane sash, and a 20th-century window with top-opening lights. The building features a dentilled brick eaves cornice, a hipped roof, and plain close verges. Each range has an axial stack, each with a central square flue flanked by diagonally-set flues.
Inside, the east range's first floor has a room with a deep coved ceiling and a central rose. The south range contains two first-floor rooms lined with early 18th-century plank and muntin panelling. This building previously served as the offices for Kilnwick Hall, which was demolished in 1951.
