Description

Nos 10 and 12 on Newbegin in Beverley are two adjoining properties, with No 10 being an early 19th-century refronting of an older house. This three-storey building is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof supported by widely spaced eaves brackets. It has three windows, which are hung sashes with glazing bars, and are adorned with painted stone heads and cill strings on the ground and first floors. The doorcase is made of painted stone and includes two applied Doric columns with low neckings, which were formerly columns from Hawleymoor's nave gallery in the Minster. The entablature has a pulvinated frieze and cornice, and the entrance features a six-panel door, with the upper panels glazed, set in a deep arched reveal with a radial bar fanlight. The base of the building is rendered beneath the ground floor string. The garden front shows various dates of construction.

No 12 is a detached wing of the same property, built in red brick over two storeys with a slate roof. It has four windows with rendered lintels, hung sashes with glazing bars, and a plain door frame leading to a six-panel door with fielded upper panels and a three-light fanlight. A plinth is also present, and there is a built-in Gothick foot scraper. This wing likely dates from 10 to 15 years later than the front of the house.

Inside No 10, there is a mid-18th-century staircase featuring an open string, turned balusters (with every other one missing in the lower flight), a moulded handrail, and a 19th-century newel. The handrail curves at the top, resembling that of No 8 Lairgate, suggesting it may have originated from Hotham House. All other interior features are from the 19th century.

A "National Monument Register Photograph" shall be added at the end of the description.
