Description
The Gate House, which includes an archway and lodges (numbers 2 and 4), is located at Sewerby House and features attached forecourt walls and gatepiers to the west. This structure was built in the mid-19th century and showcases a lofty pedimented Doric archway made of yellow brick with ashlar dressings. The archway has a panelled soffit and is flanked by single-storey square lodges, also in yellow brick, which feature rusticated stone quoins. Each lodge has one window on each face, surrounded by moulded stone with a keystone and cill on tabs, a cornice, and hung sashes with glazing bars. The lodges have a stone eaves cornice and hipped roofs. The doors are six-panel designs in moulded stone surrounds with cornices. The composition includes curved forecourt walls with stone coping and plinth, as well as gatepiers. The architects of this structure were Gilbert Scott and George Moffat. The Gate House, along with the Lodge (No 16), forms part of a group that includes Sewerby House, its terrace balustrade, attached garden wall, courtyard archway, conservatory, and stable block.
