Description
BURTON AGNES MAIN STREET TA 1063-1163 (north side, off) 11/28 Walls and gate piers to north, east and west of Walled Garden at Burton Agnes Hall and abutting Gatehouse
GV II Walls and gate piers. c1600 with later additions and alterations. Pinkish- orange brick in English garden wall bond with ashlar dressings. Approximately inverted U-shaped on plan with extension to west which abutts gatehouse (qv). Walls are approximately 3 metres high and stepped. Mainly with moulded plinth, dentil cornice and rubbed brick copings which are bell- shaped on section, except to north wall of walled garden which has pilaster buttresses and ashlar copings. Entrances to walled garden on north wall, one an inserted flat-headed entrance to north-west corner with C18 wrought- iron gate, the other with cambered head between square piers which have pyramidal finials and wrought-iron gate between. To west of walled garden a blocked elliptically-arched opening.
