Description
The National Westminster Bank is an Italianate bank building constructed in 1864 by W Hawe. It stands three storeys tall and is fronted in ashlar. The building is topped with a curved segmental pediment that features blank strapwork labels and a leaf finial. A cornice supported by brackets runs along the top. There are four round-headed windows with moulded dripmoulds and carved finials, with the cills resting on a cornice that supports consoles at the bases of the pilasters dividing the bays and at the ends. The first-floor windows create a continuous arcade, featuring non-classical Ionic half-columns adorned with swags. A narrow balcony sits at the height of the first-floor cill, supported by carved consoles. The ground floor has three windows, with the centre window being shortened, along with a doorway flanked by attached non-classical half-columns. This building is included as part of a group.
