Description
Rimswell Water Tower is a water tower built in 1916 for Hull Corporation Waterworks. It is constructed of reinforced concrete and has a circular plan with a projecting entrance on the west side. The tower consists of three stages: a single-storey drum-shaped base, a central tower, and an upper cylindrical water tank supported by eight columns.
The base features a chamfered plinth and pilaster strips that carry a cornice and a coped blocking course. The entrance section is rectangular and has clasping pilaster strips, a board door with strap hinges set in a raised surround with a stepped key. To the left of the door is a plaque inscribed with "CITY OF HULL WATERWORKS WITHENSEA AND SOUTH HOLDERNESS SUPPLY 1916" along with the names of aldermen. Above the door is the Hull coat of arms in relief, flanked by two 6-pane windows in raised surrounds, each with raised panels above and aprons below.
The cylindrical tower above has a board door with strap hinges in a keyed raised surround and two 6-pane windows with architraves. The surrounding arcade consists of eight square chamfered columns with moulded capitals that support segmental arches and moulded brackets beneath the upper tank. This tank features a band, pilaster strips, a cornice, and a blocking course similar to the base. A short central tower projects above the tank, topped with a conical roof.
Inside, the base contains pumps and a 300,000-gallon tank, while the upper tank has a capacity of 100,000 gallons and surrounds the central tower, which includes a spiral staircase and pipe-work dated 1914. This structure is a distinguished example of early reinforced concrete building.
