Description

The former stableblock to Tranby Croft, built in 1874, was designed by C R Chorley of Leeds. It features white brick with orange brick dressings and hipped Welsh slate roofs with bracket eaves. The building has a quadrangular plan and includes a four-storey tower at the north-east corner.

The main eastern front showcases a central rounded entrance archway with large wooden panel gates. This arch is flanked by pilasters with moulded ashlar capitals and a prominent ashlar keystone inscribed with "WA 1874." Above the arch, there are two round-headed sash windows. Single-storey wings on either side contain single sashes, pairs of narrow sashes, and additional single sashes.

The tower at the north-east corner stands four storeys tall. The ground floor features single round-headed sashes on the north and east faces, accented by orange brick bands. The first floor has an ashlar and brick band with single round-headed sashes on each face, also with orange brick bands. The second floor presents large round arches on each face, each containing two round-headed sashes. Above this, an arched corbel table band supports three round arches, each with a single smaller sash. The tower is capped with a pyramidal slate roof featuring a bracketed corbel table.

The inner courtyard is surrounded by single-storey stable ranges on three sides. The two-storey western range has a projecting gabled centre with a round-headed doorway flanked by blind arches, and above it, there are two broad sashes. The gable is topped with a square wooden cupola that includes a clock, an arcade, and a leaded square dome with a weather vane. This stableblock was constructed to serve Tranby Croft for Arthur Wilson.
