Description
The Cross Keys Hotel is a mid-18th century building located on the west side of Lairgate in Beverley. It is three storeys high, constructed of painted brick with a slate roof and features a moulded brick eaves cornice that is unusual for the area. The façade includes five near flush frame sash windows, now without glazing bars, each topped with gauged arches and mainly featuring triple key blocks, along with stone cills.
The entrance is marked by an early 19th-century wooden doorcase with applied Tuscan columns and an entablature, leading to a heavy eight-panel door that lacks a fanlight. The building has a plinth at its base.
Inside, the staircase is likely from Hotham House and is certainly reused, as it ends abruptly where it meets a more modern flight. The staircase features an open string, plain newels with moulded caps, and a moulded handrail that is ridged up to the newels and curves on the landing. The balusters are of a conventional turned type below but are octagonal and taper downwards above. The central baluster of the lower flight is flat cut and also tapers downwards, reminiscent of early 17th-century designs, with a similar stage repeated in the muntin to the dado opposite. There is a moulded dado rail, with plain muntin otherwise.
Additionally, there are two simpler staircases leading to the second floor, featuring closed strings, plain newels, moulded handrails, and boxed-in balusters. One notable feature is a good 18th-century round-headed window with glazing bars, plain imposts, a moulded architrave, internally splayed reveals, and a key block.
