Description

Nos 1 and 3 Norwood are two dwellings that date back to around 1700, as indicated by the central break forward, a feature typical of Holderness architecture. Originally, these two homes were part of a larger house that adjoined Norwood House. The buildings are two storeys tall with an attic, constructed of red brick and topped with a roof made of asbestos tiles and modern pantiles, featuring gabled sliding casement dormers. They have wood and iron gutters, and the eaves cornice is broken at the centre.

The house has a moulded stone base and a break forward that contains the main doors and a window above. Currently, there are four windows with gauged flat arches, painted near flush frame sashes, most of which still have their glazing bars, while former end windows have been filled in. The ground floor features three windows and three doors, including two wooden doorcases with fluted Doric pilasters and entablatures that are broken over them, along with shelf cornices. One door consists of six fielded panels, while the other is modern, and both have four-light rectangular fanlights above.

Inside, there is a staircase from the mid-18th century with a closed string, plain newels, a moulded handrail, and turned balusters with square knops. The ground floor also includes various mid-19th century chimneypieces, as well as a Beverley-type peat-burning fireplace.
