Description
This is a late Georgian cast iron lamp standard, likely made by William Crosskill of Beverley after 1826. It stands in the grass verge next to No 1 New Walk. The lamp has a square, stepped base featuring a stilted arch on each face of the lower step, with a wreath on each face of the upper step. The column rises from an octagonal step and is designed in the form of a fasces minus axehead, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. Above a narrow collar, there is a section that resembles Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
