Description

Abbey Cottage on Tippett Lane is a house with origins dating back to the 13th century. It underwent significant remodeling in the 16th century, features an 18th-century roof, and has a 19th-century side outshut. The exterior is constructed of coursed rubble with freestone dressings and quoins, brick, and a pantiled roof. The building has two storeys and two bays, with a single-storey outshut on the right.

On the ground floor, there are three 20th-century two-light openings with mullions and boarded shutters, while the first floor has two six-pane sash windows. The house has end stacks and plain close verges. The rear elevation features 13th-century chamfered door jambs on the left under a rebuilt segmental head. Both the left and rear elevations have a chamfered plinth, and the left elevation includes a 13th-century string course with filleted roll moulding at the eaves level.

Inside, there is a massive brick stack that serves two inglenook fireplaces with chamfered bressumers to the right, which appears to be a 16th-century addition intended to heat both the existing building and its eastern extension, now only visible as footings. A bread oven can be seen as a pilaster buttress on the front elevation, and herringbone brickwork is present in the hearths. The 20th-century ground-floor windows have been inserted into larger four-centred openings. The interior also features a series of massive, chamfered primary joists. At the time of the resurvey, the building was disused and derelict. Abbey Cottage is the last surviving structure of Meaux Abbey, which was founded in 1150, and significant earthworks from the abbey remain in the surrounding area.
