Description
This is a pillar box located near the northeast corner of the junction with Slatey Road in Birkenhead, Claughton. It was made around 1856 by Smith and Hawkes of Birmingham for the General Post Office. The pillar box is made of cast iron and painted red. It features a circular column with 16 flutes on a moulded base and a moulded top band that supports a low conical cap. The top band displays the words "Post Office" in raised letters, along with a royal cypher, VR, with a central crown on either side. Below this band, there is a vertical posting slot with "Letter Box" incised in small letters within a raised frame. Additionally, there is a square framed panel below for collection information, and the door to the box is located at the rear. Only about eight boxes of this type are still in use by the Post Office.
