Description

The Oxton Road Congregational Church, located on Oxton Road in Birkenhead, was built between 1857 and 1858, designed by William Cole. The church is constructed from coursed and squared rubble with a Westmorland slate roof. It features a wide nave and a prominent north tower, the latter characterized by clasping buttresses that end in truncated pinnacles. The west entrance is distinguished by a steep, moulded arch with shafts and an ogee cusped foliated hood mould. Above, a blank traceried band sits below paired bell chamber windows, topped by an embattled parapet, which has lost its original angle pinnacles. The west window is a large, seven-light design with reticulated tracery. A canted baptistery projects to the north, featuring trefoiled windows. Angle buttresses rise with heavy, octagonal pinnacles. Inside the nave, six bays are defined by buttresses, with three-light, Decorated-style windows. A flat-roofed porch is situated towards the south-west, incorporating a chamfered and moulded arched doorway. A further doorway on the south-east leads to an added hall block, concealing a rose window above.
