Description
The main eastern entrance gates to Flaybrick Hill Cemetery, located next to the Eastern Lodge, were built between 1862 and 1864 by architects Lucy and Littler. The entrance features a stone flanking wall and piers, along with cast-iron gates. The quadrant flanking wall includes a plinth and raking copings, and on its southern side, there is a drinking fountain with a cast iron bowl set in a gabletted niche. The gate piers are polygonal with stepped tapered caps and quatrefoil panels that display the date and initials B.I.C., which stands for Birkenhead Improvement Commission. The cast-iron gates are designed with twisted shafts, arrow heads, and quatrefoil decoration. Additionally, there is a side gate leading to the office, which is topped with a gothic stone overarch.
