Description

Castellated Lodge is a lodge for Birkenhead Park, built between 1843 and 1847 by Lewis Hornblower and John Robertson under the direction of Sir Joseph Paxton. The structure is made of coursed and squared rubble with a leaded roof. It has two storeys and an asymmetrical plan featuring a series of towers. The main tower is advanced to the left and includes a single-storey flat-roofed porch at the angle, along with a 3-light mullioned and transomed window on each floor. The design incorporates angle buttresses and an embattled projecting parapet. There is a similar tower recessed to the right and an octagonal tower at the rear. This lodge is part of the original development of Birkenhead Park.
