Description

A pair of houses dating from approximately 1840 to 1850, possibly designed by Walter Scott. They are constructed of brick with stone dressings and have a Welsh slate roof. The houses are in a simple Tudor style and are symmetrical. Originally each house had two bays, with a basement level. There are side entrances; the right-hand house has an ogee-arched door, while the left-hand house features a single-storey gabled porch with a renewed doorway in an ogee arch. The wide, outer gabled bays have attics. The mullions of the windows are now missing. A narrower inner bay has two inserted doors and original window openings, again with missing mullions. Gablets are positioned above the upper windows. Axial and end wall stacks are present, featuring diagonal flues. Cast iron spearhead railings define the basement area. Each house has paired panelled gate piers with shallow pyramidal caps.
