Description
The Smithy, built in 1905 by J. Lomax Simpson, is a Grade II listed building located on the north side of Neston Road in Thornton Hough. This single-storey structure features a timber-frame design set on a stone base, topped with a hipped stone slate roof that includes gablets. The building consists of four bays, with the central bays recessed behind continuous bracketed eaves, resembling the form of a Wealden house.
The windows are adorned with leaded glazing; the central bays have three-light windows, while the first bay features a three-light window, and the fourth bay has a projecting five-light window with a weatherboard gable. The central entrance and the entrance to the first bay both have Tudor-style heads and paired plank doors with strap hinges. A stone cross-axial stack is present, and the returns of the building include louvred gablets. The left return has a swept cat-slide roof, while the right return features a projecting gabled four-light window and a three-light window.
At the rear, there is a stone lateral stack, a two-light window, and an entrance. The forecourt is marked by a sign on a post and a spreading chestnut tree.
