Description

Old Double Lock is a two-rise staircase lock built in 1758, located at the head of a branch to the east of the main canal in Blackbrook Road, St. Helens. It is constructed of stone and has a barrel-shaped plan. The gates have been removed, and the lock is now preserved as a cascade. The north side has been reduced in height. This structure is recognized as the oldest British example of a staircase lock.
