Description

The New Double Lock on the Sankey Canal, dating from around 1772, is a significant structure in St. Helens. It is likely designed by engineer H. Berry and features a staircase lock consisting of two levels, constructed partly of stone and partly of brick, with rounded stone copings. The upper lock gates are still intact, although the lock is partially filled with rubbish. This lock holds historical importance as part of one of the earliest British canals, which played a crucial role in the transport of coal before the advent of railways.
