Description

The Church of Holy Trinity is a church built in 1857 by W. and J. Hay, with an apse added in 1883-1884 by J. Gandy. It features rubble walling made from industrial waste with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The church has a nave with a south porch, transepts, and an apse. The nave consists of three bays with two-light windows situated between weathered buttresses. The west end includes angle buttresses and a three-light window with simple, intersecting tracery, which has likely been altered, as well as a bell cote. The gabled south porch features an arch without capitals. The north transept has a four-light segmental pointed window, while the south transept has a three-light window similar to that at the west end. The canted apse contains three two-light windows and a north organ loft. Inside, there is a deep west gallery, and the roofs are supported by arch-braced collar trusses with flying arches at the crossing. This church is notable as one of only two buildings in St. Helens constructed entirely from industrial waste, likely sourced from local chemical works.
