ST. HELENS WATSON STREET (north side) No. 9 (Tank house, beside canal at Crown Glass Works)

Glass house. 1883. Brick with slate roof. Rectangular gabled building. East facade has weathered buttresses between deep battered buttresses. West facade has truncated remains of deep battered buttresses. South gable end has blocked segmental headed windows above large entrance; blocked round window in gable. Oval cone rises through roof. Plaque records the first glass tank, which started working here in 1887. Interior not inspected but said to have cast iron columns supporting cone and former Siemens reverberatory tank furnace.
