Description

The County Stand at Aintree Racecourse is a grandstand built in 1885, as indicated by a date stone on a pilaster strip. The building features a yellow brick facade on the east side and a red brick facade on the west, with stone dressings. It is two storeys high and includes a roof terrace supported by cast iron columns. The structure has 41 bays, with a central section of 12 bays that has three-bay bowed ends. The ground floor is adorned with rusticated pilaster strips, a frieze, and a cornice, along with round-headed windows and two entrances. The first floor also has round-headed windows and entrances, and the terrace is surrounded by a balustrade and columns with capitals inspired by the Tower of the Winds.

To the right of the central section, there are seven bays that have undergone 20th-century alterations, including a projecting first-floor balcony on cast iron columns for the last six bays of the central section and the first four bays to the right. An additional 16 bays to the right also feature 20th-century alterations, including a red brick extension on the ground floor. To the left of the central section, there are six bays that are similar, with some ground floor alterations, and the sixth bay includes a passage. The west facade is characterized by three crow-stepped gables and a rectangular pavilion at the south end next to the bowed bay, along with some brick stacks. The building is historically significant as it is associated with the Grand National, which began as the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase in 1839, with racing at Aintree dating back to 1829.
