Description
Numbers 215, 217, and 219 are shops and a cafe with an attached verandah, built in 1903 by James E Sanders. The building has been altered and restored in the late 20th century. It features timber-framed cladding, likely on a steel framework, and a slate roof, all designed in a Neo-Tudor style. The structure has a narrow rectangular plan and is located on a corner site.
The exterior consists of three storeys and attics, with two unequal gabled bays. There are wood and plaster sill bands with arcading at the first and second floors, a dentilled wooden cornice on the wider right-hand bay, and oversailing attic gables that include carved bressumers, bargeboards, and tall finials. The ground floor has altered shop fronts. The first floor features a small rectangular oriel window in the centre, flanked by canted oriels, all with ogival-headed lights. The second floor has large jettied rectangular oriels with transomed lights, including six to the left and ten to the right, plus three in its return. The smaller left-hand attic has transomed windows set behind a three-bay balcony, while the right-hand attic has triple cross-windows.
The attached three-bay verandah is supported by cast-iron columns with foliated bases, composite caps, and large foliated brackets. It also features a foliated frieze, elaborate cresting on the centre bay, and a curved glazed roof. This building forms a group with Nos 207-213 to the left and Nos 221-233 to the right, and the verandah is part of the characteristic series found along this street.
