Description
This is a commercial building, originally containing seven shops, dating to the later 19th century. It has been altered since its original construction. The building is constructed of red brick, with Number 177 painted white, sandstone dressings, and red tile roofs to the oriel windows. The roof itself is likely slate. A verandah is made of cast iron and glass. The style is eclectic.
The exterior has three storeys and eight bays. It includes pilasters, some of which incorporate downspouts, a sill band on the second floor, a machicolated parapet, and false gablets in all bays except for the third and sixth. The ground floor has 20th-century shop fronts. The first floor features canted oriel windows with wooden mullions and transoms, and tiled roofs that are alternately hipped and single-pitched on brackets. The second floor has three narrow windows per bay, except for the third and sixth, which have four. All windows on the second floor have shouldered heads. There are ridge chimneys.
An eight-bay verandah features slender cast-iron columns, altered fascias, and a renewed single-pitched glazed roof. The interior has not been inspected. The building forms a group with Numbers 143-161 to the left and Numbers 179-205 to the right, and the verandah is part of a series characteristic of this street.
