Description
The Church of St. Philip is a Grade II listed church built between 1861 and 1863 by architect H. Gee. It is constructed from rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The church consists of a nave with a northwest tower, transepts, a short chancel, and a south vestry. The exterior includes cornices and coped gables adorned with fleur-de-lys finials.
The three-bay nave is characterized by two-light windows with Geometrical tracery set between weathered buttresses, while the west window is more elaborate, featuring five lights. The short tower has a single-order entrance on the west side and is divided into three stages. The lowest stage has set-back buttresses and paired lancets, topped by a cornice with ball flowers and weathering. The second stage includes angle buttresses and additional lancets, while the bell stage is marked by stepped triple lancets and clock faces on the west and south sides, culminating in a cornice with gargoyles and a splayed spire.
The transepts are two bays deep, each with angle buttresses and a five-light window above a gabled porch that has a single-order entrance. The return windows are two-light. The chancel features a prominent five-light window, and the projecting vestry has traceried lancets along with a south door that includes a straight-headed window with three ogee-headed lights. The gabled projection has an entrance and a two-light window.
Inside, the church boasts hammer-beam roofs and a spacious crossing area, along with a notable 19th-century stained glass window in the chancel.
