Description

Cross Barn is a barn that has been converted into a house, dating from around 1540, as confirmed by carbon dating. It features a cruck frame, brick construction with stone dressings, and a slate roof. The building is one storey high with an attic and has a cruciform plan. The northern wing includes quoins and ventilation holes, as well as an inserted attic window. To the left, there is a 20th-century open-fronted garage supported by two cast iron quatrefoil columns, with an entrance located within. To the right, there is a round-headed entrance that has been converted into a window, featuring a stone surround, along with a similar 20th-century window on the right return of the north wing. The right return also has a former barn entrance, now a window, with stone quoins and a timber lintel. The rear of the building has an inserted window, while the south wing features a 20th-century entrance and a blocked pitching eye. A central brick stack is present inside, which contains two open cruck trusses and several collar and strut trusses. The barn was used as a Catholic chapel in the 17th and 18th centuries, as referenced in relation to the barn at Grange Farm on Grange Road.
