Description

A row of four houses at 2-5 Marine Terrace, Crosby, was likely built around 1840 and has been altered since. The houses are constructed of painted stucco with slate roofs, and were originally planned with a double depth. Nos 2 and 3 were originally built as a pair of halls. No. 4 is a double-fronted house, while the others are single-fronted, with all having rear extensions.

The houses are two storeys high, with two windows each, except for No. 4, which has three and is symmetrical. A giant pilaster is situated on the left corner of No. 2, and a first-floor band runs slightly above sill level. Entry doorways are square-headed; No. 3 has a half-glazed door, the others have panelled doors and plain overlights, and No. 4 features a pilastered architrave. No. 4 has canted bay windows at ground floor, while the remaining windows are sash windows without glazing bars, except for those at the first floor of No. 5, which have been altered. Windows at Nos 2 and 3 have plain surrounds, those at the first floor of No. 3 being triangular-headed. At Nos 4 and 5, the first-floor windows have plain reveals, those of No. 4 being adorned with open-segmental pediments on consoles. No. 3 has two skylights, and No. 5 has two small, flat-roofed attic dormers. Short, corniced chimneys are present.

The attached verandahs differ between properties; that of No. 4 is of cast iron, spanning three wide bays with standards formed of paired slender columns featuring tracery, ornamental brackets, and delicate cresting. No. 2 has cast-iron openwork standards, No. 3 has pairs of simple columns, and No. 5 has latticed standards. The interiors have not been inspected.

The buildings are part of a group which includes Nos 6, 7 and 8 to the right, and together with the listed buildings in Adelaide Terrace, Bath Street, Beach Lawn and Marine Crescent, form a group within the Waterloo Conservation Area of Crosby.
