Description
The Church of Saint Columba is a church built in 1932 by B. A. Miller. It is constructed of pale brick with stone dressings and features a green pantile roof. The church has a 4-bay nave with aisles, a higher crossing with transepts, and a 2-bay chancel that is even higher, with a chapel to the ritual south and a vestry to the north. The nave includes stepped lancets at the west end and paired clerestory lancets. The aisles have triple lancets and round-headed entrances at the west end, which are adorned with recessed tympana and plaques above. The crossing features paired lancets beneath stone tympana with carved figures. The flat-roofed transepts have canted angles and triple lancets. The chancel has two lancets on the north and south sides with canted angles, and a tall stone cross motif at the east end, along with a hipped roof and a northwest bell cote with a shaped gable.
Inside, the church has a roughcast finish and a round-arched arcade with no mouldings or capitals. The roof features tie beams and is painted with a zig-zag pattern. The chancel arch is flanked by a pulpit and a reading desk, with a tall curtain behind the altar. The rood and font are by Bainbridge Copnall. A nave altar, designed in a similar style to the pulpit and reading desk, is the principal addition to this intact and striking interior.
