Description
Broughton Hall is a house, now used as a prep school by the Convent of Mercy, built around 1856. It features rock-faced stone and a steeply pitched slate roof. The building has two storeys with a basement and consists of seven bays, with a later two-bay extension on the right. The first seven bays are symmetrical, with the central bay projecting forward and the end bays also projecting, all topped with gables. There are sill courses and an embattled parapet. The windows are mullioned and transomed, featuring pointed lights. The first bay includes an oriel window supported by a long bracket, with traceried heads and an embattled parapet. The central bay has an enclosed porch with a stepped gable and finial, along with octagonal turrets that have buttresses and pinnacles. The Tudor-arched entrance has a three-light window above it. Above the porch, the first-floor window has four stepped ogee-headed lights under a relieving arch. The recessed bays have two-light windows flanking lateral stacks, and the end basement windows are similar, also featuring a stepped parapet. The left return of the building has a conservatory made of iron and glass, consisting of seven by seven bays with a belvedere. There is a connecting bay to the house and an opposite three-bay forward break with an entrance. The columns and arched panels are elaborately decorated. The conservatory now has a felt roof, added in 1984.
