Description
The Walker Art Gallery is an art gallery built between 1874 and 1877, designed by H. H. Vale. It is constructed of stone, featuring two storeys and thirteen bays. The ground floor is rusticated and includes a Greek key band, with windows that have balustraded aprons and sashes without glazing bars. The end bays project forward and are flanked by flat Corinthian pilasters. The central five bays are highlighted by a giant hexastyle Corinthian portico, behind which three bays are recessed, containing three entrances. The central entrance features an architrave and entablature, with brackets and windows above. The first floor has no windows, but includes fielded panels in the end bays and long relief friezes. There is an entablature and balustrade, with a central raised block that holds a seated statue of Liverpool. Steps lead up to the portico, which is flanked by statues of Raphael and Michelangelo, created by Warrington Wood, and is enclosed by a balustraded wall.
