Description
This drinking fountain, built in 1883, features a canopy designed to resemble an ancient market cross. Constructed from stone, it has a pyramidal stone slate roof. The fountain showcases elliptical arches on all sides, each adorned with cartouche keys. It is richly decorated with Jacobean ornamentation, including beasts in the spandrels, a cornice above, and alternating masks and mermaids. The southeast side displays the Liverpool arms. An inscription on the fountain reads, "ERECTED BY THE PEOPLE OF GATEACRE: IN MEMORY OF JOHN. H.: WILSON 1883." Additionally, there are strapwork cornices and a gargoyle on the north side, topped with a ball finial on the roof.
