Description
7 Water Street and 3 Fenwick Street is a bank building constructed in 1896 by Grayson and Ould. The block on Water Street was replaced in 1934 by Palmer and Holden. The building is made of granite and stands three storeys high with five symmetrical bays. The ground floor features rusticated stonework with a central doorway and four round-arched windows, all set on a polished red granite plinth. There are giant fluted Doric columns in antis that support the first and second floors. The first floor includes balustraded balconies for five rectangular windows, each with architraves and cornices, and the central window has a segmental pediment. The top floor has five smaller windows. Inside, the banking hall has a segmental barrel vault over the central aisle, supported by an engaged acanthus column made of marble. The entrance features bronze doors adorned with gaping lion masks. The building also has a long return to Fenwick Street, which consists of nine bays with round-headed ground floor windows, each tympanum carved with Celtic interlace.
