Description

Nos 59-61 on Tithebarn Street is a printing and bookbinding factory and warehouse built around 1870 for the Union Paper and Printing Company Ltd. The building is constructed of brick, possibly with some iron framing, and has a roof that is not visible. It stands four storeys tall, with an attic and basement, and features an integrated design that includes workshops, office showrooms, and warehousing.

The facade has a regular four-window range, with a full-height taking-in opening to the right, which has a round-headed arch beneath a gable and recessed double planked doors at each level. The basement is glazed, while the ground floor is set beneath a moulded stone cornice that supports a name board fascia. The principal entrance is located to the left and is flanked by debased Corinthian rusticated pilasters, featuring double half-glazed doors with rectangular overlights. The windows in the entrance bay have brick surrounds and shouldered arches, while all other windows are divided by iron columns with varied capitals and lintel treatments. The attic is a half storey and is treated similarly. The rear of the building has almost continuous glazing on all floors. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is understood to contain cast iron columns on all floors. This building is a notable example of a Victorian integrated printing factory.
