Description

Nos. 8, 10, and 12 Newton Street are warehouses, workshops, and offices that date from around 1860 to 1870 and have been altered. The building is constructed of brown brick with some polychromy and sandstone dressings, and it has a rectangular plan in an eclectic style with Gothic influences. It features a basement and four storeys, divided into four unequal bays by brick pilasters, with sill-bands, a cornice, and a parapet.

On the ground floor, there are coupled doorways in the second bay, which have banded plinths extending to the height of the tall basement. Above these are short colonettes with carved capitals and arched heads, featuring rounded intrados and pointed extrados, along with linked hoodmoulds. To the left, there is a large mullioned three-light window, with tripartite basement openings below. However, the ground floor has been altered with 20th-century shop fronts and numerous large signboards attached.

The upper floors contain three-light windows with brick mullions in the first and third bays, and coupled windows in the second and fourth bays. The second-floor windows have banded arched heads and linked hoodmoulds, and all windows are sashed. The building is topped with a prominent cornice and a panelled parapet. The right-hand return wall features a two-storey canted bay (altered at ground floor), arched windows on the second floor, and a gabled arched window on the third floor. The rear and interior of the building were not inspected. Historically, around 1905, the building was occupied by an umbrella manufacturer and sewing machine businesses. It is included for its group value.
