Description
Kingsley House is a late 19th-century garment warehouse and workshop complex. It is located on Newton Street, Manchester, with curved corner returns. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with a sandstone ashlar plinth and dressings, and a slate roof featuring skylights. The plan is rectangular, and it encompasses a basement and three main storeys, plus two attic storeys. It has five bays between the curved corners. The ground floor is treated in a 18th-century style, featuring a moulded plinth, a frieze, and a cornice. A prominent bracketed cornice sits above the second floor. The attic is designed as a high parapet, topped with a mansard roof containing skylight windows. The ground floor doorway, located in the second bay, has an architrave with a swag on the frieze and an open pediment within the cornice. Windows on the ground floor have simpler architraves, with those at the corners being curved. The upper floors and parapet attic are unadorned, with coupled windows in the three centre bays and single windows elsewhere. All windows have stone sills and heads, with most being sash windows (mostly without glazing bars, and those at the corners curved). Chimneys are located on the parapet above the first, third, fourth, and sixth piers. The skylight fenestration is irregular. The returns each feature two bays in matching style. One return has two bays of staggered windows, while the other includes a square turret with a pyramidal roof. The building was occupied around 1905 by a mantle and costume manufacturer, with workrooms on the fourth and fifth floors.
