Description

Gambier Terrace, which includes No. 2 Canning Street, is a terrace of eleven houses built around 1836 by John Foster Junior. The structure is made of stone and consists of three storeys and an attic, featuring 34 bays. The first seven bays and the last six bays project from the main body of the terrace.

In the first seven bays, the ground floor displays channelled rustication, and there are round-headed windows with sashes that include glazing bars. The central entrance is accentuated by a Greek Doric porch. Above, the first and second floors are adorned with a giant Ionic colonnade, and the windows on these floors, along with the porch, have rectangular iron balconies. Most windows are sashed.

The terrace features an entablature and an attic embellished with pilasters that have recessed panels. The last six bays mirror the earlier design but include two round-headed entrances and a giant pilastrade. The central bays are distinguished by a Doric colonnade with an Ionic entablature that supports a deep balcony with an iron balustrade. The plain entrances lead to first-floor windows that are framed with architraves, friezes, and cornices, while the second-floor windows have architraves and a sill band. The centre three windows also feature rectangular iron balconies. The entablature and attic are topped with a cornice, and all windows are sashed, with most having glazing bars.

The return to Canning Street consists of five bays, with a projecting entrance that has a distyle Doric colonnade in antis.
