Description
The barn and attached farm buildings at Grange Farm are constructed from sandstone rubble and feature a stone slate roof. The main barn is oriented north-south and has a west wall with a cart entrance that includes a segmental brick arch. To the left of this entrance, there is an inserted opening with a steel lintel and a pitching door located above. Further left, beyond quoins indicating an addition, is a continuation of the barn that also has a cart entrance with a segmental brick arch, a window with plain reveals, and a blocked doorway to its right.
A range that is straight-jointed to the barn runs at a right angle, suggesting it is likely a later addition. The south wall of this range features five windows with plain reveals on the ground floor, and on the first floor, there is a window with a chamfered surround typical of the mid or late 18th century. There are doors to the left, to the right of the first window, and to the right of the fifth window, with a pitching door above the third window.
The north wall of this range, which faces the road, has two openings with plain reveals on each floor. A break in the stonework indicates that the western end of the building has been rebuilt. On the ground floor, now part of a lean-to addition, there is a blocked doorway with a segmental head and tooling characteristic of the early 19th century. Above this doorway is a plaque that reads 'JA HA JA 1694'. On the first floor above the lean-to, there is a mullioned window with two segmental lights and a hood, likely from the 19th century. Local tradition suggests that the building may have once served as a chapel, possibly due to the ecclesiastical appearance of the window. The interior was not accessible during the survey in March 1987. Grange Farm itself is not included in this listing.
